My Approach
Relationality
As social beings and from the moment we're born, we seek relationships that meet our ever-evolving needs and desires. While we often crave the love of those around us, connecting to people, let alone ourselves, isn’t easy. Patterns of relating to others are learned early in life and are often carried into adulthood. In our work together, I'll pay close attention to the ways you connect (and disconnect) with me, yourself, and others so that you may learn how to create and maintain healthy relationships that nourish you.
Cultural Humility
The lack of culturally diverse representation within the mental health field poses a challenge for individuals looking to connect with providers who share an understanding of minority experiences. Because the therapeutic relationship is a key component of treatment, it's important for your therapist to honor and respect the similarities and differences between you. Without cultural humility, you may be left feeling unheard and misunderstood, which is counterproductive to therapy.
Trauma Informed
Ask not “what’s wrong with you?” but “what happened to you?” Your experiences, symptoms, and/or illness(es) do not define you. When we encounter trauma, we often attempt to push these painful experiences out of our conscious awareness to protect ourselves. For example, we might find temporary relief and distraction through food, work, sex. If we ignore these painful experiences without processing them, however, they may disrupt our lives in detrimental ways. I'll work with you to address these difficult-to-process moments so that you no longer feel a need to avoid them.
Systems Based
While the circumstances we find ourselves in don't necessarily dictate our lives, they can influence us. How do our environments impact the way we connect with ourselves and others? Whether historical, socioeconomic, familial, or cultural, it's important to consider how the systems we live in help or hinder us.
Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy is an in-depth treatment that focuses on strengthening self-understanding, self-esteem, and agency through the exploration and interpretation of:

-
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
-
underlying defenses, wishes, and fears
-
childhood and past experiences
-
meaningful relationships
Knowing yourself intimately is foundational to social, emotional, and even physical well-being. You might feel lost and helpless when you aren't aware of the whats, whys, and hows behind what makes you, you. By analyzing the complexities of your experiences, we're able to gain a deeper understanding of how conscious and unconscious dynamics impact your life.
